Vimy 1917 May 6 cont.
This signal their artillery commenced a bombardment of
"No Man's Land" on our front and on that of our Left Battalion.
At about 12.20 am enemy, from back of LA COLLETTE
sent up an orange flare, followed by another from the rear
of that point. On this signal, their artillery gradually
ceased. A large number of white lare lights were sent up
throughout the night from the left and from the right of LA
COLLETTE. Several were seem to come from in front of the
village. None of the enemy were seen or encountered
by our Patrols last night. At 7 o'clock last evening
a party of four of the enemy were seen working on what
appeared to be a gun emplacement at N. 31. c. 36. 60. Rifles
sighted at 1000 yards were fired, the shots falling fhort.
On increasing the range to 1150 yards and firing the
party dispersed. During the evening eight-heavy trench
mortar shells were fired at our front line, three hits
