last night. "A" Company will carry forward tonight, from
Batt. headquarters 40 shovels and 20 picks - O.C. "C" Co
will acquaint the O.C. "A" Co with work under way, and
work proposed. "C" Co on relief will occupy
"A" Co's present position, the left of our third line.
Heavy hostile artillery fire. 77's and 4.2's was directed
from 9 o'clock to 9.30 o'clock last night on our present
front line and our old front line. About 3 o'clock this
morning the sunken road from S. 6. G. 1. 1. to S. 6. c. 4. 5. was
heavily shelled. At the same time, some air bursting shrap-
nel was placed over our front lines. This activity cou-
ntinued for half an hour, but no casualties were caused.
At the same periods, our support line and CYRIL. C. T.
were bombarded as well as the LENS-ARRAS road and la
CHAUDIERE. Very few direct hits were made on our trench
lines, but it was more notieable than previously, that the
