Vimy 1917 May 3 cont.
The limited fire on our front and support lines consisted of
77's, 4.2's and overhead shrapnel, while some heavy shells
were directed on the Lens-Arras road. From 4.45 am, our
aeroplanes patrolled this Battalion frontage. No casualties
have been reported, as yet, as a result of enemy retaliation.
An officer's Patrol under Lieut. H. C. Graves, Scout Officer,
and his scouts, fully patrolled the frontage of left sub-
sector from 10.30 pm last night to 3 am today, recom??-
tring as far as wire in front of enemy front line system.
No enemy patrols were seen or encountered, nor was any
movement dissernable in enemy line.
Hostile machine gun fire, in very small bursts, came inter-
mitantly throughout the night from the direction of M. 36.a.3.9
and F.1.a.8.5.

The enemy displalyed a considerable number of flares from
the direction of T.1.a.3.9 M.36.d.8.3 1/4 and T. 1. a. 9. 6.
