Left Subsector Front Line Vimy 1917 May 3 cont.

night one minute after opening of our barrage, but did not
appear on our particular front until about three minutes.
Both Red and Green rockets appeared simulataneously,
each bursting into two lights. These signals continued
for about two minutes, then no more were seen on this
front for five minues, when same signals were again
repeated several ties. It would appear that these signals
were sent up during our two five minute periods of Lewis
Gun and rifle fire demonstration.

First enemy retaliation by artillery was at 3.52 am &
was very light, being directed on our front line. Not until
4 am was there hostile fire of any proportions on our
front. At 4.15 am fire slackened considerably and ap-
peared to be practically nil about 4.30 am. At the same
hour our artillery barrage on this Brigade front ceased. At
no time was hostile fire concentrated or continuous.
