"To the Board of Trustees of the Ohio University,
Gentlemen- Through the Helping of God the members of the University,
both Faculty and Students, have during the year, enjoyed with very few
exceptions, uninterrupted health. Owing to the breaking out of the Smallpox at the be-
ginning of the Fall Term, in the South. and there was excitement at the commence-
ment of the Spring Term the number of Students has not been as great the present year
as it otherwise would have been. We have had one hundred and fifty eight stu-dents enrolled during the year. The Senior Class is the largest enrolled since my con-
nection with the Instition.
The department and application of the Students have been extraordinary- not
one case immorality or willful disobedience has occured which has required dis-
mission or explusion. The intercourse between Professors and Students have been
of the most interesting and satisfactory character.
The following Counties viz. Athens, Butler, Clinton, Columbiana, Darke,
Gallia, Highland, Hocking, Muskingum, Noble, Ross, Vinton and Guernsey,
thirteen in number, have each sent one young man to the University, free of
charge for tuition according to the Resolution of the Board of Trustees entered on the
Books of the University.
Soon after the meeting of the Board of Trustees, Prof. E.T. Tappan resigned
his place in the University. The classes in his Departure were during the Fall
and
Winter Terms, taught without employing an additional teacher, by the other members
of the Faculty. At the close of the Winter term the acting Committee appointed Prof
R.A. Arthur of Charleston Va. to fill the vacant chair. The Department has been suc-
cessfully and ably filled the past term, and too would cordially recommend
Prof. R.A. Arthur to the Board as a suitable name to fill the chair of Math-
ematics.
