Annual Report of the President,
"To the Board of Trustees of the Ohio University
Gentlemen
The year now closing
has been one of more than usual success & prosperity.
The health of the Students and Instructors has been
uniformly good, though the aggregate number
of Students including both departments, the
preparitory and collegiate, has has been nearly
the same as last year, yet the number in the
Collegiate Department has increased.
The department and application of the Students
to study have been highly commendable and with
very few exceptions nothing has happened to call
for discipline or censure. Indeed I can say
without the fear of being charged with boasting,
that the Instruction is gradually improving,
and in all those marks which characterise a prosperous
and healthy literary institution, there has during
this year been a decided improvement, over any
one of the Eight years in which I have been
connected with the University.
The following Counties, viz, Ross, Gallia
Muskingum, Highland, Washington, Butler,
Athens, Dark, Clinton, Fairfield, Columbiana,
and Noble, twelve in number have each sent one
young man free of charge for tuition, according
to the Resolution of the Board of Trustees entered
in the Books of the University, we have also
students from seven different states of the Union.
Soon after the last meeting of the Board of
Trustees, Prof Allyn resigned the chair of Languages
and Mr J Brown the preparitory department.
The resignations of those worthy members of the
Faculty were at the time of their occurence,
very much regretted. The Acting Committee
promptly met the emergency by transferring
Prof. Young from the chair of Mathematics
to that of Languages, Electing Prof. Eli T. Tappan,
of Steubenville to the Chair of Mathematics,
and filling the vacancy occasioned by,
