Annual Meeting June 21st A.D. 1859
The Board of Trustees of the Ohio University convened at
the usual place of meeting at nine OClock A.M. argreeably
to notice. Present the following members,
Solomon Howard D.D. President, A.G. Brown, William
Aiken, John Welch, Leonidas Jewett, Horace Wilson
John E. Hanna, William T. Hand, Calvary Morris,
J.M. Dana, (Secretary) Samuel B. Pruden,
The minutes of the last annual meeting were read,
The President presented his annual Communication
which was read and Ordered to be recorded, to wit,
To the Board of Trustees of the Ohio University
Gentlemen,
The present academical year has been
one of prosperity. The general department
of the Students has been good and their devotion
to study has been very gratifying to their proffessors.
The young men who have entered
the classes this year are of a higher grade
of qualification that those of former years.
While the increase in the College classes
is more than twenty, there is a decrease inthe
junior section of the preparitory department;
this may be attributed to two causes; first
the increase of academies and high schools,; second
incraese of price of Scholarships, and room rents.
The decrease in numbers in this department
is however so far from being a bad sign, an
indication of prosperity, of the whole number
of Students (170) Eighty belong to the College
classes, Fifty Eight to the Senior Section of the Grammar
School, the remainder thirty are to the Junion
section. The health of the Faculty and
Students has been uniformly good and nothing
has interrupted the regular or slated routine of
duties in the University.
The income from room rents, contingent fee,
sale of scholarships, tuition, and diplomas is $1014.00
