Annual Meeting August 1st 1855
To the Board of Trustees of the Ohio University

Gentlemen-
The present year has been one of continued
and increasing prosperity: the number of students in
attendance upon the instruction given in the university has
gradually increased- During the present Term
120 have been in attendance, and there has been
Enrolled during the year 175, which is an increase
of 33 over that of last year.
The good order of the University has not been interrupted.
Except in a few cases, and in a slight degree only,
by the misconduct of its Students.
They have been generally faithful to their recitations
and Exhibited a commendable degree of diligent application
to study.
The moral character, of the greater portion of the
Students has been unexceptionable and the affairs
of the College have, the present year, met with few
of the eases of disorder, which sometimes disgrace
College Halls.
The health of both Students and proffessors, has been
good, and the work of teaching in the respective
departments has been faithfully and Efficiently
performed.
We congratulate the Trustees and friends of the
University in view of its present healthy condition and
the flattering prospect which opens before them.
Much has been done, and still much remains to be done,
to meet the growing demands of Southern Ohio
and portions of states adjoining, we should secure
additional Endowment.
We need at this time a Lecture Room, or Chapel, the
one which we now have being too small and in other
respects not suitable for the purpose.
How the funds are to be obtained for this object we leave
to the wisdom of the Board to determine. The chair of
Ancient Languages vacant; by the resignation of
Prof Sears to fill this proffessorship I would
respectfully suggest the name of Proff. J.M. Leavitt
who has the present year filled the chair of
