G. Biel - Scholastic theologian + principal representative
of late medieval nominalism, sometimes referred to as
Doctor profundisimus. In theology + philosophy,
Biel professed to follow the teachings of W. of Ockham.
His commentary of the "Sentences" serves as the classical
handbook of nominalism. Luther recieved his scholastic
orientation through Biel + reflects his influence in
both a positive + a negative manner.

When used in contrast with the antiqui doctors ie Augustine,
Ambrose, etc. -it refers to the Scholastics generally.
