The 1st part of the book deals with Creation, the period preceding
the section dealing with the 1st era begins with the Creation
of Eve + ends with the death of Lamech, father of Noah.
The 2nd era begins with the building of the ark + ends with
the destruction of Sodom + Gomorrah. The 3rd era is
Abrahamic. It begins with a relation of Abraham's armed
expedition for the relief of Lot, his brother. The 4th era
as defined by Schedel is the Davidic, a period of
four + 1/2 centuries beginning with a portrait + a geological
tree of the Psalmist + ending with the 1st destruction of
Jerusalem + the Babylonian captivity.
In dealing with previous periods in his history Schedel had
a sure guide in the Old Testament. In the 4+5th
periods extending from Abraham to Christ it became
necessary to take cognizance of developments in
Europe of which the Hebrew scriptures are silent.
With no adequate guide to European history available
Schedels narrative becomes a hodgepodge in which
true + legendary history is treated with equal seriousness.
The 6th era extends from the advent of Christ to
the coronation of Maximilian I as Kaiser of the Holy
Roman Empire in 1493. More than half of the Schedels
6th era is devoted to the Christian era. 3 pages at
the end are devoted to a chapter of the last era of
