The illustrations in 15th + early 16th C herbals had been traditional
+ crudely stylized. THen a remarkable change occurred in Otto Bruenfel's
Herbarum vivae eicones, whose 3 parts were printed in 1530, 31 + 38
IN it, the pictures are much larger, oftern full-folio in size, + render
the various parts of plants, especially their leaves, with amazing
exactitude of detail. Botanical illustration had been transformed
from traditional stylization to modern realism.
