- In Roman legend, a Tyrian , founder and queen of [inserted](Dido)[end inserted] Carthage,
who loved Aeneas & committed suicide when he left her . In
an earlier legend ,she killed herself to escape from the
barbarian king Iarbus. At Carthage she was worshiped
as a goddess . She was also called Elissa.

Boccaccio's De Claris Mulieribus was written & revised over a period
of years, from 1355 to at least 1357. Extant codices present
2 versions which are quite dissimilar . The earlier of these includes
a smaller number of chapters which are shorter than those
in the final version.

of Ancient Biblical & Medieval Heroines by Donato Degli Albanzami
(of Prato vecchio in Tuscany [c 1325-1411] an intimate friend of Boccaccio &
Petrarch ). It was through this version & these which later translators made
afterwards , that the book in which the famous narrator displayed his
great erudition , became a classic of Italian & consequently world
literature after his death.
-In the 2nd 1/2 of the 15th C Ulm had a population of more than 5000 &
was a very exrensive center of trade.
- Each story has a woodcut showing the heroine in one of most famous episodes in her career.
