the first ed. in any language. The 1st Augsburg illustrated
[inserted]2 owner's illustrated book[end inserted]
book & among the earliest of all German illustrated books -
preceded only by the (seven?) extremely rare Pfister
books - woodcuts, all copies of which are in public collections.
- Luther deneounced The Golden Legend as immoral &
preachers in the Reformation period called the Tales
Legends of Iron for they said they were written by
: a man - an iron mouth & leaden heart."
G. Zainer - died 1478. At the beginning of each of the 234(?)
biographies there is a small (generally 77 x 70mm) wood cut.

[inserted]W.L. Schreiber Z240.9 S3 f Ref[end inserted]G. Zainer (1471 Winterteil) printed the Illustrations first
in the space calculated for receiving them & after wards the
text. . This double printing he carried out with so such care.
that very few of the 131 woodcuts are at all out of place &
never in all copies . In 1472 he brought out the
Sommerteil , the 127 illustrations of which were printed
simultaneously - the text.
