Opus ruralium was widely circulated in manuscript form + was
to become the 1st printed work on agriculture when it
appeared in Augsburg in 1471 amtedating by 1 year the
publication of the classical works of Cato, Varro, Columella
+ Palladius, a compilation called Rei Rusticae
Scriptures or De Re Rustica. (See #264.)
- most of the medicinal infromation of Cresconzi is taken from the
Cinca instars of Platearius.
1st illust ed: between 1490-5 at Speyer by Peter Drach.
- his remarkably well written treatise on all knowledge impoetant
for a farmer remained the atendard textbook in teh field for
about 400 yrs.
-based upon various traditional works on husbandry, but
written critically from experience gained on Crescenzi's
country place, the Villa d'Olma, near Bologna. Includes
sections on hunting + fishing, the making of wine + the
diseases of animals, as well as cultivation of cerals,
trees + plants.
- The older world was that of accumulated practival wisdom
assembled by the Romans, nurtured by Arab scholars, +
developed in a maniscript vol. about 1240 by P. Crescenzi of
Bologna.
- Pietro based the work on his own wide experience + known
observations, but also used the works of classical writers on
agriculture including Cato, Verso, Palladius + Columella.
- Became the most important treatise on agronomy of the Middle
Ages. While he refers to classical + later writers including
Palladius Pliny the Elder + Avicenna, his work is based on a
lifetime of personal experience. The intented audience was
not so much landed aristocrats as the newly enangent
borghesi investing their wealth in fauna + country estates,
who could refer to this practical guide for information
on matters from arboriculture to falconry + from fishing to
veternary science.
