1st production of the Kelmscott Press (1891) The
Story of the Glittering Plain (small quarts format)
- almost every single piece of decoration in the K. Press
books was designed by Morris (644)
-Morris purchased a copy of de Worde's 1527 edition
of the Goldend Legend in 1890. This gave focus to his
typographic plans; he determined to print an
edition of the Golden Legend. CaxTors' original 1483
edition was used as copy text. In Sept 1892 he
made an agreement whereby Bernard Quaristch would
publish the book. The Golden Legend was preceded
by 6 smaller Kelmscott Press books chiefly because
a larger sheet of paper was required for it than that
originally supplied by Batcheln.
The Works of Geoffrey Chamcer (June 1896) - 438 copies -425 paper -13 vellum
-Initials of 3 kinds, whether Roman or gothio; 1 letters unterlaced

w Germanic kind of Renaissance scroll-work; 3 + letters decorated
to foliage. All 3 kinds were in use by 1892, or whether
gothic or Roman they were used indiscriminately to the 3
Kelmscott Press types.
William Morris - writer, poet, artist, craftsman, designer + pioneer
socialist. B Shaw regarded Morris as the greatest man he had
