Sebastian Münster's Cosmography which was 1st printed
in 1544, went through 8 editions in its author's
lifetime & 35 more down to 1628.

1st to introduce a separate map for
each of the 4 known continents of his time.

Cosmography - textbooks of geography, astronomy, history,
& natural science illustrated with maps & figures -
1st appeared in the 16th C.

The woodcuts frequently bear the engraver's initials C.S. ->
probably Christopher Stimmer - also H.H.

Adam Petri - worked at Basel from 1507 to 1527
After his death in 1528 the business
was continued by his son Heinrich (Henric Petri)
who published chiefly ed. of the Greek & Latin
classics. He also brought out several ed of the famous
cosmography of S. Munster.

- The 3 great early Christian Hebraists were Reuchlin, Konrad
Pellikan (1478-1556) & Sebastian Munster (1488-1522) Munster
was a Franciscan priest & professor of Hebrew at Tubingen, Basel,
& Heidelberg as well as the author of numerous works on the
Hebrew language. In the 1520's he became a follower of Luther &
broke T the church formally in 1529. He later married the widow
of a printer in Basel, & his step son Heinrich Petri became
his printer.
