Hans Holbein the Younger - born at Angsburg (1497/8-1543)
elder brother - Ambrosius (d.1519)
father - hans Holbein the Eldu (c. 1460-1524)
went to Basel in 1515 - 1517 & 19 was in Lucene
first woodcut design was published by Frober in 1516.
did the bulk of the marginal drawings late in 1515 or early
in 1516 for Erasmus's Laus Stultitiu (In Praise of Folly)
returned to Basel late in 1519.
1st visit to England in 1526.
Dance of Death series completed by Holbein 1523-26 -
although not published by M. & G. Trechard until 1538.
In 1523 Holbein printed his 1st portraits of Erasmus
who settled in Basel in 1521.
Returned to England in 1532 where he remained until his
death in 1543.

R. Mortimer The majority of Holbein's subjects correspond T the Giunts-
Sacon series described under #64, the 1521 Bible
published by Pierre Bailly.

Pollard Z 124 p77 That Holbein's Old Testament designs also belong to his Basel
period is shown by Fraschouer in 1531, though the original cuts
were not published till 7 years later (Iconus) As
printed by the Treschsels they are 86 in number.
The cuts were also used by the Trechsels in a Bible
of the same year, & both the Bible & the cuts were
republished by the Frellons.
