Such a service would be held in grateful remembrance by
the whole University body. And the hope was warmly expressed
that he would be spared many years to enjoy in
cultured leisure, and among his friends, the honors bestowed
upon him.

Proceeding to the ordinary business of the day, it was agreed
to continue the bonus payments in connection with
salaries, inaugurated the year before. For Heads of Departments
the bonus was $300.00; for Assistant and Associate Professors
$200,00; for Lecturers $100.00. The total increase
amounted to $9,350.00. The Board was happy to acknowledge
so far, and in this (as it knew, inadequate) way, the excellent
work that all were doing.

The report of the Treasurer, considering the disturbed
state of financial affairs in the country (for the war was
still on, and one of its most acute blows had just passed)
was fairly satisfactory.

There was a degree of friction between the Provincial
Department of Education and the University Faculty of
Education. The rules and methods of the Department were
rigid and sterotyped in the extreme. The Faculty
here was convinced that the major interests involved would
be better served, if allowed more initiative and control
on its own part. The Department, however, was unyielding.
This brought a strong, dignified protest from the Council
to the effect that if there was to be a renewal of the
