if the other friends of Queen's would raise another half million.
Time would tell what the "other friends" thought of the splendid
proposition. This was the seventh or eighth appeal; even so, they
might rise to the occasion.

The Provincial Government renewed the grant of $100,000.00
made last year, and increased it by $10,000.00 more. And
another rift in the clouds let down some sunshine. Notice
was received of a bequest of $35,000.00 , made by Dr George
Christian Hoffman, of Ottawa, to be applied, according to
the Will, to the foundation of two Fellowships, $20,000.00
for one in Pathological Research, and $15,000.00 for another
in extended surgical studies. Dr Hoffman was an Honor
graduate, and a warm admirer of Queen's spirits and work.

The idea of an annual lectureship identifed with the
Chancellor's office was a happy one, and the course has
taken high rank in scholarship, in richness and variety
of subjects, and in breadth of view. The father of the
idea, and the foundation, was Sir Sandford Fleming,
the second holder of the office. Every Faculty of the
University has had it turn in offering the lecture, and it
has from the beginning, been the custom to deliver it at the
Annual Conference of the theological Alumni. On June
22nd, 1901, Sir Sandford, as a foundation for this lecture,
transferred to the University, in the name of the Hon. James
Maclennan, Chiarman of the Board, sixty preferred shares
of the Dominion Iron and Steel Company, Limited. On the
