In the first place, I may just mention that many of us entertain certain poetical ideals of sublime conduct - such as turning the right cheek when the left is struck, - which we really have no intention of pursuing.
Their effect upon our conduct, if they have any, may be left out of account.
But we also have certain ideals of conduct to which we do in sober prose, intend to make our own conform.
We formulate these into rules, because a rigid rule is a great aid in resisting the wiles of the [deviler?es]
