Thursday, Aug 29th 1867

The hopes which we all cherished yes-
terday were finally realized about
six oclock in the evening by the
first glimpse of land, it was
scarcely perceptible to our inexperienced
eyes, and hardly distinguishable from
the waves of the sea. We all
crowded upon the forcastle to feast
our eyes with the welcome sight,
the strict rules established for the
regulation of the forcastle having
been done away for an hour, for
the purpose of granting us that
privilege. A very long uneven dark
line off our starboard bow was pointed
out by the sailors as a part of
the Jersey Shore in the neighborhood
of Atlantic City; and although as a
general thing we accepted every thing
the sailors said with a liberal dis-
count, we forced ourselves to believe
that it was really the land until
as evening closed in whatever
