Tuesday Aug 13th

We had a most tumultuous night
last night, and a most restless one
for myself, for I tossed about all night
witrh a miserable sick headache. The wind
at times was very high, sometimes approach-
ing to a gale and then dying away almost
to a calm. There was also some thunder
and lightning, this morning there was a
perfect calm. At ten the Captain had
us all mustered on deck when our
names, ages, occupations etc. were taken
a proceeding which reminds us we are
approaching the shores of America. At
3 P.M. a southewest breeze sprang up and
continued all evening, making five or six
knots an hour.

Wednesday Aug. 14

Making very good time. About ten this
morning a white squall struck us all
aback, in which five sails were split.
It was very terrific while it lasted which
was only about ten minutes and fears
