On Saturday, we went aboard the vessel,
having first secured our baggage which
had been lying at Wapping Station for
several days. It was rather a cheerless
comfortless day. We sat on the wharf
for two or three hours among sixty or
seventy others who like us were about to depart
for the far west, but who from their
appearance were the poorest emigrants.
They sat about upon their baggage which I
supposed was all they possessed in this
world, and as they did not appear particularly
happy and as the day was gloomy and
rainy, we cannot say that we commenced
our journey under particularly favorable
auspices. We were not sorry when we
get comfortably settled in the little house
on deck which was to be our home for
many days to come. Sunday we spent in
the dock and on yesterday morning we
were tugged out into the river where
we are lying at present and where I sup-
pose we will stop until we get a fair
