Solsley, and many distinguished men,
of more recent times. It is a most extensive
place covering ten acres of grounds. We
did not stop to explore the ground part
which is a perfect labyrinth of arches,
passages, corridors, courtyards, dark deserts
and decay, and mouldy with age, but
passed right through into the lovely gardens
in front. We walked about the gardens
had a look at the celebrated grapevine
the largest in the world and which is
certainly a magnificient sight, especially at
this season, when the fruit is hanging in
innumerable clusters; walked through the
Queen Mary's private garden, in which is a
most beautifully arched row of trees, called
Queen Mary's Bower. We then lost ourselves
in the maze, and strolled through
Bushey Park, which is filled pricnipally
with horse chesnut trees. We then returned
to the building, and spent the remainder
of the day in examining the large
collection of pictures and relics of [anoseous?]
