protest as it was church-time. We
were at length obliged to quit the Public
House, and the rain still continuing,
we went to the pier with the intention of
taking the boat the rest of the way.
We stood on the pier shivering with
the cold, under a slight roof which scarcely
protected us from the drifting rain, for
more than an hour waiting for the boat
to make its appearance; amusing our-
sevles as best we could. It was a
very picturesque spot, and the view from
the pier in the middle of the river was
very fine, and under any other circumstances
would have been very charming. The old
bridge at Kew was a very prominent object
and under one of its arches there stood
a man fishing, which added to the beauity
of the scene. We accosted the man and
inquired whether he was catching,
any thing. He answered that he was
only catching a cold; we thought
as much ourselves. At length the boat
slowly made its appearance coming
