Sunday May 21st

For the first time in my life I worked
all night without rest on Friday night
and all day yesterday up till eight o'clock
being an extent of 37 hours, and I feel
quite exhausted today, in consequence.
We have a great deal of extra work at
our place; the regualr hours are very
long and exhaustive; and the over-time
in addition, is quite killing. This overtime
business is the cause of England; it is
carried out to a very injurious extent; but
it seems very strange to me that one set
of people should be worked to death
while another set is starving, who would
be thankful for an hour's work.
I got to bed very early this evening,
and this morning Tom and I in company
of another gentleman took a walk
along the Brighton Railway. After
tea Tom, his wife and I walked to the
Park and the Heath.
