Theatre to see the pantomime of "Richard
the Lion Hearated or King Pumpkin.

This day will be remarkable in the annals
of London on account of the dense fog
which has hung over the great city,
pretty much all day. During the day it
was nothing more than an ordinary
fog, but it began to thicken with the
approach of evening so that at five
when night had fairly closed in, it
had become so dense as to render
locomotion any other way than on foot
impossible. People were obliged to grope
their way along by feeling along the
houses and as you could not see an
arm's length before you many collisions
were the consequence. It was a very
strange sight to me, if I can call it a
sight when you can only hear and not
see, you could hear sounds all round
you but you might as well have
been blind for you could see nothing.
