the church, and we wpent some time in
looking round the venerable edifice at some
of the monuments with which the walls were
covered, some of them of a very ancient
date, and with very peculiar epitaphs. In
one corner there stands the monument erected
in memory of [[Milton]] who I believe was
buried here. It is of white marble and very
handsome. We spent nearly an hour in
the old church and then returning the
keys to the sexton, we returned home
perfectly well satisfied with our afternoons
pastime.

Sunday Aug 21st
I intended to take a little excursion today
down the river to see the [[Great Eastern]],
but I was disappointed by the weather.
I made a start and got as far a s

rain coming on heavily I was obliged
to put in there for shelter. I stopped
