would almost seem as if the com-
munity had gone mad so high does
the excitement run as the eventful
hour approaches which is to make or
ruin so many who have betted largely
upon the result. This evening I walked
over [[London Bridge]] and through the
Borough for some distance to see the
[actions?]. It was a very gay and
lively scene. The road was jammed
with vehicles of all sorts from the
four horse drag of the noble to the
donkey cart of the [[Costermonger]].
The occupants of these vehicles were
very noisy and demonstrative in their
pleasure and a great deal of chaff
was going on, not altogether harmless
between them and the crowd of
people who lined the street, who seemed
to derive very great pleasure in throwing
bags of flour, shooting peas, and aiming
missles at the white hats of the
Derby-goers. Whenever one of the latter
was unfortunate to get his hat battered
