this day the principal race takes place at
[[Epsom]] and I should think that four
fifths of the people of [[England]] any how
of [[London]] are interested in it and there
is scarcely a person whom you meet who
is not primarily interested in it. It
has been the sole topic at our shop for
a fortnight at least and no matter
where you may be in the street or in
the coffee house, you hear of nothing else
but the [[Derby]], and the favorite horse
and I have heard so much of horse-
racing and betting that I am heartily
sick and tired of it. Sweepstakes,
a sort of lottery, are very common,
in there the money of the subscribers who
generally pay a shilling or so each is
divided into three prizes which are
settled on the first three horses which
come in at the race, the largest prize
on the first horse. These are very
fashionable and some people have
shares in three or four. Today
