we have yet had. Although it was Sunday
there appeared to be a great number of vessels
of all descriptions proceeding up and down the
river. We passed along the front of the noble
building we saw from the river as we came
up on my arrival; the Naval Asylum.
It is built of a whitish sort of stone and
covers an immense piece of ground. There
were plenty of the old [Tars?] walking about in
their peculiar dress, blue cloth clothes and
a very wide-brimmed hat; they were mostly
old and decrepit although we met some
apparently very young men. We returned
by way of Charlton + Black Heath. This
evening we went to the old church of
St. Paul's Deptford, a very fine edifice.
Not being very well situated at my
cousins as regards conveniences for
reading and writing I spoke to him
this afternoon upon the propriety of
changing my residence for one a little
nearer my place of business. He
very much opposed it on the grounds
that I could not better my condition any way.
