of the old fashioned high backed pews and
I didn't know whether it was the favorable
opportunity of indulging unobserved, or
whether it was the effect of the wine I
had been drinking at uncles; but anyhow
I fell asleep and lost all the sermon
whether good or bad. I was awakened
by the pew opener an old lady who
good-naturedly informed me that service
was over and that the church was empty.
I thanked her for her kindness for had
she not observed me I should most
assuredly have been locked in. I spent the
remainder of the day at Uncles and
returned to New Cross after supper.

Sunday Sept. 6th 1863
As with last week my time has been
so much occupied with business and
one way and another that I have had
no time to pay any attention to my diary
so am obliged to [?] it up at
the end of the week, and so I expect I
shall have to continue to so so long as
I am at present situated. But as one
