respectable. The hours are excessively
long from 7 o'clock, till 8 in the evening
with half an hour breakfast, one hour
dinner and half an hour tea. My
wages are but sixteen shillings or about
four dollars per week which will just be
sufficient to cover my expenses by strict
economy.

This morning I went up to London to see
my uncle and spent the day with him.
I attended morning service with my aunt
at St. Paul's Cathedral. After dinner we
had a glass of wine after which I went
to afternoon service at St. Giles Cripplegate
which is next door to Uncles, whose parlor
windows look out upon the old church-
yard. It is a very fine church and one
of the oldest in London being many
hundred years old but has been [?]
renovated, and repaired. The congre-
gation at this afternoon service was
very small and most of the pews were
empty. I was placed by myself in one
