a great number of people men women and
children were sitting on the grass and on
benches eating and drinking. Rather a
strange sight to me. We at once joined
them, and taking a seat at a table
in the garden we called for some porter
of a sort called "Cooper." The company by
which we were surrounded was not very select
being a mixture of laborers, servant girls, shopmen
and a few respectable people like ourselves,
but all alike engaged in passing their
Sunday evening in this to me objectional way.
After resting here half an hour we walked
slowly back and reached home about
supper time.

Monday Aug. 24th
Wandered about town pretty much all
morning with the principal object of getting
something to do but without any reason-
able hope of obtaining anything. London
