William gave me the document which made
me a soldier in the United States Service for
the space of three years. We the[n] returned
to Uncle Thomas' and after supper he and
I took a short walk and a glass of
ale. I then started with his son Thomas
for his residence situated some few miles
from town at a place called New Cross
in the County of Kent, where I was intro-
duced to his wife and where at the close
of the eventful day I passed the night.

Thursday Aug. 20th
We returned to London by the seven o'clock
train this morning. Before proceeding to my
Uncle's house my cousin Tom showed me
two or three of the sights of London. The first
place was Billingsgate the great fish market
of London, the women of which are celebrated
all over the world for their coarse
language. It was an immense open place under
a glass roof in which a very dense crowd
was engaged in the buying and disposing
of a great variety of fish. Accompanying
