At length a policeman whom I asked put
me in the right road and in a few
minutes time, after going through several
streets I reached my Uncle's house. Summoning
up all the courage I was able I boldly
walked into the shop situated at the front
of the house and presented my letter of
introduction to my uncle an elderly
gentleman whom I found sitting on a
stool engaged in gilding a picture frame.
After hastily reading it he gave me a
hearty welcome and introduced me to his
son Thomas and an elderly gentleman
whom he called Mr. Ward, an old acquaint-
ance of my father's. After a few minutes
conversation during which he showed me
a copy of the Delaware County Republican
[crossed out text - containing my name in the list of drafted
men for the township of Upper Darby,]
he ushered me into the parlor and
introduced me to a middle aged person
whom he called Mrs [Dunn?] and who
appeared to be very deaf. She at once
