of the passengers as well as most of the officers
and crew of the vessel had left the ship
and she lay almost deserted far out in
the centre of the Basin. The few who were
left on board spent the evening as best
they could. I could not help experiencing
a feeling of sorrow at leaving the old
ship which had been my home for five
weeks, and with feelings of this nature
only varied by speculatiions as to the char-
acter of the people with whom in the
course of next day I was to make myself
acquainted I retired to the old bunk
for the last time and was soon in the
land of dreams.

Wednesday Aug. 19th
I was up very early, and after a hearty
breakfast, immediately commenced to make
preperations to leave. During the passage
I made the acquaintance of one of the
sailors, who when I was very badly off for
provisions, very kindly furnished me with
a portion of his own allowance by means
of which I was enabled to eke out my own
