is a very large building before which
were several large piles of shot and
shell piled up with great regularity.
After passing Woolwich we left Blackwall
on our right and passed Greenwich
on our left. Greenwich is celebrated
for its Naval Hospital for old and
infirm seamen which stands on
the river side and presents a noble
and handsome appearance as it
is approached from the river. It is
also celebrated for its observatory,
which occupies a lofty position on
a hill adjacent to the town. Lying
in the river in front of Greenwich
is an immense vessel once a
man of war but now dismantled
and converted into a hospital
for contagious diseases. After passing
Greenwich the river becomes still
narrower, and is so thickly filled
with vessels that it is an absolute
