He has now a new answer to give to the questions which is good? That which by its presence imparts truth to the known and power to the knower you may say is the idea of the good being the cause of science and of truth as known both things fine knowledge and truth you will rightly deem this other finer than either. 508E And further for all things known not only is the knowledge due to the good but their very being and essecence are due to it yet the good is not essence but far exceed essence in authority and power. 509B. The seventh book opens with the celebrated parable of the Cave. After that he takes up the last question with which this miscellaneous but superb appendix to the republic deals and describes the mode of higher education of the defenders of his state. They are to study arithmetic
