a four year course. All of the work is thorough and eminently
practical. If there were a shorter and easier road through it,
more students might be found traveling it, but they
would not add to our schoolastic strength or toour reputation
as an educational institution. We cannot afford to de cheap
work in any department of the University. There is no
reason why we should not , at an early day, make ample
provision for a four year course in Electrical Engineering. The cost
of establishing a thorough course in Civil Engineering, and
[illegible] Engineering would not be great. A slight increase
of revenue whould enable to us to meet these recognized
and growing wants. Our present facilities for instruction are
that with but little effort and expense we could adequately
provide instruction preparatory to any phase of professional life
now recognized. Already we announce a "Preparatory Medical
Course" which, completed, gives the student advanced student

the same plan could be extended to such subjects as dentistry
and pharmacy. A little readjustment of a students work,
a wise selection of electives, would enable him to completing one
of the regular courses for which provision is now made, and
at the same time round out at least one years work in any
course leading to a professional degree. There are both time savings
and time wasting in educational processes. No one with
his way to make in the world can afford to spend twenty
or more years of his life in preparation for something useful
and [?remunerative?]. His training ought to bring swifter returns
than that. Under prevading conditions the average young
man has no reason to expect a paying career
in the medical profession prior to his 28th year. This is
a period of time nearly equal to the average life of
the race.
In this connection, it is proper and timely to
refer to suggestions that have been made for an
affiliation of the "Cincinnati College of Dental Surgery"
and the "Cincinnati College of Pharmacy" with Ohio
University. The question of such union is of importance
and should not be hastily set aside on affirmatively decided.
