Last year the Board made no provision for the
supervision of the Ladies Hall. For months after the
opening of the Fall term, with the responsibility divided
among several teacher, there was a good deal of
friction, as it was impossible for me to be on hand to
adjust every disagreement that might arise - The
Committee therefore put Miss Linton in charge
and since that time matters have gone along
with a fair degree of smoothness. She has had a
good deal of experience as a teacher and is otherwise
admirably fitted for these duties. Yet I do not [?suppoce?]
that it is necessary at present to make arrangements
for the ensuing year, as the compensation will depend

to accept resignations I was forced to recognize vacancies

his election to the vacant Chair of Biology and Geology
at a salary of $1400 for the first year. He does not
ask for an assistant. His name is William F. Mercer.
He is a Ph D. of Cornell University - I also ask
for his department $400. His department cost in
salaries along last year $1800.00.
I may add in this connection that in spite of some
expenditures for teaching not contemplated last summer
I found it possible to make such readjustment that the
actual outlay was some [crossed out] four [end crossed out] [inserted] two [end inserted] hundred dollars less than the
