[Sunday, March 27, 1955]
Arrived in Israel at 6 A.M. Flowers.
Flying over the coast line, I had a strang
and exhilerating feeling.
Keen excitement ran thru the 'planes'
capacity load of those coming to
spend Passover in the new land.

Awaiting us at the Lidda airport,
were Dr and Mrs Lincoln Hale,
a representative from our Embassy, a
delegation from the Orchestra, under
whose management we're brot,
photographers etc. We went thru customs
in a painless fashion and had tea
with Jofe's relatives then started for
the city arriving about [blank] minutes later
in Tel-Aviv. At the (new) hotel Ramat-
Aviv I received word that Mrs Roosevelt
wanted to see me when I arrived. Word
was phoned to her cottage and in a short
time she came over. We had a nice visit.
Mrs R. left Israel 3 hours later.
My suite was quite nice and quite cold. We got
an electric heater and a second one, doctor's orders.
Food at the hotel was good.
Retired fairly early, being tired after the long
day which began at 12:01 A.M. when we
left Rome for Tel-Aviv
