Mr. Henry White

Sir

I am fav’d with yours of 17th ult’o per Mr. St. John who
has been here a few days, any service I can render him he may freely command.
If you are yet unprovided with a clerk, the young gentleman I noted to you
not being engag’d would go on tryall & if he suits would tarry on such
terms as you & he may agree upon. His capacity am told is good & probably would
soon make himself master of your method of book keeping. On rec’t hereof if
you should be incin’d to try him it might not be amiss to signyfy what wages you
could afford to give, he paying his own board or how much if you take him into
your own house. I am

Mr. John Hanson

I duly rec’d your fav’r under cover of Messrs. Franklin’s
& of the 29th ult’o should have answerd the former in course, but imagind it
would not reach York before your departure for Hispaniola, the vast diffi-
culty in commanding cash prevented my accepting your order in their fav’r
otherwise then by assuring them by letter the neat proceeds of the brigg
Samuels cargo will be remitted them duly as I am in cash for the same,
she has not yet appeard, but am in hourly expectation of her arrival. I
dont imagine any gentleman here you supply’d with permessions lay
any blame to you, but place it where it is justly due. Am glad of the assurances
you give of the dutys being settled to my mind at N.C. Such cotton wool as that you
shipt me still holds up at 17/ & will if it should even decline something
considerable in price (which may hapen before you can get any to market)
still turn out more to your advantage then to import molasses, which I
apprehend will not soon advance above 9/ old tenor per gallon, a confirma-
tion of a reduction of the duty would be a very acceptable peice of news here,
but fear it is premature, I am wishing you a good voyage & prospe-
urous issue of your affairs at the cape

Your most hum’l servant
