The labels of the latter bear only one number which always refers to this book. The eggs are marked in a different way and it is perhaps best to give an example as follows. (14)-766 1/5 [these numbers are circled]. The number in parenthesis (14) refers to its catalogue number, the other, 766, to the Check List of the American Ornithologists' Union, which in this case is Sialia [italics] sialis [italics] or the Common Bluebird. The denominator of the fraction 1/5 following the A.O.U. number denotes that the set consisted of five eggs. [The following sentence is crossed out]. The nests when they contain eggs always bear the same catalogue number as their contents. The numerator of the fraction denotes that this is the first set of Sialia [italics] sialis [italics] entered in the collection and is usually ["usually" crossed out] known as the set-mark.
