BACKGROUND OF THE BOYS

Ages given are at time of Ex-
pedition Departure

E. LORNE KNIGHT 28 years

He and his parents lived at McMinnville, Oregon.
He had "studied” in Seattle. Began working with the Stef-
ansson
Expeditions in 1915 continuing with Stefansson for
four years. He and Harold Noice went with Stef on the
longest sledge trip Stef ever made. See Eng edit p 93.
He had also assisted Stef with his lectures in the States.
Stef says: "Knight was of an active temperament."

FREDERICK MAURER 29 years

In 1912 Maurer had been on a whaling ship which was
wintering in the Arctic north of Canada. In 1913 he joined
the crew (as fireman) on Stefansson's exploration ship
"Karluk" which was crushed by the ice, and from which he
and others made their escape to Wrangel Island in 1914.
Maurer raised the flag there to affirm British rights.
Maurer lectured some on the arctic and Stef describes him
as somewhat of the "contemplative " type. He married
Delphine Jones of Niles, Ohio shortly before the expedition
departure.
