Frederick William Maurer.

Frederick William Maurer was born January
2, 1893, in New Philadelphia, Ohio.

He attended the public schools of this city
until he reached the age of fifteen.
He then took a business course in Akron O.
At the age of seventeen, he left San Francisco
on a whaler, - "Belvedere" - and spent nearly
two years in the Arctic.

In 1913 he joined the Canadian Arctic
Expedition and returned in Sept. 1914. During
this time he spent seven months on Wrangel
Island
.

The summer of 1915 he lectured for the
Redpath Chautauqua. Then he attended
Marietta College (Ohio) one year.

In 1917 he joined the U.S. Marines as a
volunteer. He served two years training
men at Paris Island.

The summer of 1921 he spent on lecture tour
with Mr. V Stefansson in the West and South.
August 18, 1921 he left Seattle for Wrangel Island.
