Dear Mr. Maurer:

On reading over carefully your letter of December 15th,
I find parts of it so admirably summarize an important point which I want
to make that I am asking your permission to inconrporate it in the book.
The parts I want to print I have extracted and am enclosing herewith. In
two or three places you will see I have filled in a little. As you wrote
it, the letter was perfectly clear to me or to anyone thoroughly familiar
with the situation, but I thought these amendations would make it clearer
to an outsider. I have already sent you an exact copy of your letter.
If you compare that with the extract I am now sending, you will see that
my changes do not alter the meaning anywhere - only bring it out more
clearly for the benefit of those not familiar.

On recipt of this letter will you please telegraph
me at my expense at the Harvard Club,New York, saying whether you will
permit me to use the extract. Or if you are in principle willing to let
me use it but do not like the form it is in now, please write out your
preferred form and mail it with a special delivery stamp. While the
telegram should be addressed to the Harvard Club, any letter should be
addressed to the Geographical Society as usual.

Mr. John Maurer,
New Philadelphia,
Ohio
