Dear Miss Maurer:-

The trouble about all such visions as are mentioned
in your recent letter is that I may never go North again on
a real expedition. Of course we shall get Fred and the
rest out of Wrangle Island. It is possible, however, that
Wrangle will be colonized and permanently occupied. There
will be various developments in the North as you say. It is
therefore entirely likely that within a year or two you will
have some chance to go North.

Only today I have declined to sign a very liberal
book contract for a narrative of my coming expedition, on the
ground that there probably will be no coming expedition.

Thank you for all the pleasant things you say about
my book and my work. The articles in the "World's Work"
which interested you will be out in a book called "The North-
ward Course of Empire," probably in August. Have just been
finishing today the reading of the first proof.

Miss Ruth Maurer,
