Blowing a gale all day from the East so stayed in our
bags. An enormous surf from the S.S.E. and caused us to
try and pull up our dory farther but found it frozen
down to the sand, so had to leave it. A few large cakes to
be seen and the rest of the ocean is nearly slush covered.

"Everything comes to him who waits" (or goes after it). At
7 A.M. the dogs set up a howl and Crawford rushed out
and about 100 feet or less W. of the tents stood a female and
two cubs. Crawford (in 7 shots) killed them and the cubs
proved to be last winter's, a male and a female. The mystery
to us is how they bears got as close to camp as they did. There
was very little blu blubber on any one of them and the
"old lady" had a stomach full of grass, and incidently, all
of us, dogs included, have a full bl belly tonight. The
heavy surf has some what abated and there is con-
siderable slush on the water. Variable airs. Cold and clear.

After making my entry for yesterday a fox came into camp
and Crawford shot it. A male, very fat with poor fur. The
surf went down during the night and this morning the
sea was covered with young ice. Crawford and I hauled
a load of wood from the W. and found the going bad
along the beach. No much snow. Light breeze from the E. Cldy
