Saw a seal at a new hole to S.E. and Crawford
went after him. No luck for down he went. Near
there was another hole and Crawford attempted to
get near them. The closer closest he got to them
was about 400 yds. Later in the day I saw the
same seal that Crawford first went after this
A.M. and took a long shot but missed. I
have seen seals killed on the ice several times
and have done the same my self but I have
never yet seen seals who were so frightened.
As soon as they see one, whe crawling, or
walking, no matter how far the distance, down
they go. I wish I could understand why. Saw
geese, ducks and a few seagulls. On the ice
the snow is melting very slowly and practically
no water is to be seen. The land is still covered,
excepting the tops of hummocks and sharp ridges.

Saw a seal after breakfast to the Eastward about 2
miles. Maurer went after him and shot and hit him
but he got into his hole and we lost him. He
was hard to approach so Maurer created a "blind"
about 50 or 60 yds. from the hole. Another seal
